Tikwalus Heritage Trail

The Tikwalus Heritage Trail is an 11.7 kilometre loop trail located on the east side of the Fraser Canyon north of the Nlaka’pamux community of Spuzzum. The trail is part of a much larger travel and communication route used by Nlaka’pamux communities for plant harvesting, trapping, and hunting and to travel between settlements and camping sites up and down the canyon for millennia. This part of the trail system led from the settlement at Kequeloose along the low-lying river terraces of the Fraser to Lake Mountain high above the canyon’s eastern slopes where the route continued north along the high ridges to Boston Bar and Lytton or east to Merritt and Nicola Lake. Bark-stripped western red cedars (quatqulhup) along the trail stand as testimony to the deep history of Nlaka’pamux forestry practices that included harvesting trees and other plants for food, medicine, clothing and building materials. For a brief time in the 19e century, Nlaka’pamux communities shared the trail with the Hudson Bay Company and the trail was widened and renovated by the Nlaka’pamux to allow pack horses to traverse this route. The trail has been recently restored by a collaboration between the Spuzzum First Nation, the Hope Mountain Centre, the New Pathways to Gold Society and the British Columbia Ministry of Transport, and Recreation Sites & Trails BC.
